About

Join us in welcoming the XVII Corps Field Hospital for Civil War Medical Weekend here at the Missouri Civil War Museum! Learn all about the role of medicine during our nation’s bloodiest and deadliest conflict through surgery demonstrations, presentations, and living history.

Families and children are welcome to attend, but surgery demonstrations may be disturbing or unsettling for some.

Daily Schedule of Events

10:00am – Sick Call – This session enables the public to “experience” the sick call conducted every morning in the camps. Each participant is given a card that they read telling their “illness.” The surgeon prescribes for each of the sick soldiers based upon 1860’s medicine. This includes shirkers, malaria. Intermittent fevers, nostalgia, and others. The session is about 15 minutes.

11:00am – Recruitment Session for Children – This session is for 3-12 grade students. It focuses on the questions required to medically approve a Union or Confederate soldier in 1861. Students go to “stations” for approval. Each student is provided a free, suitable for framing certificate. The session is 10-20 minutes depending on the number of students.

1:00pm – Medical Demonstration, Minor Surgery – This demonstration session provides the public with an understanding of minor surgery (bullet, tooth, or other object extraction). The session is 15 minutes with questions from the audience.

2:00pm – Medicine of the 1860s – This session enables the public to understand the types of medicine and medical procedures that were available to the doctor of 1850-1865. In an era prior to germ theory, the participants see and touch real instruments of the period. The session is 15 minutes with audience participation and questions.

3:00pm – Triage the Patients – This session allows the public to “triage” a group of patients that are coming into the hospital on cards. They will understand the process and see if they can be as successful as 1860’s doctors. The session is about 15 minutes.

4:00pm – Medical Demonstration – Minor Surgery – This demonstration session provides the public with an understanding of minor surgery (bullet, tooth, or other object extraction). The session is 15 minutes with questions from the audience.
